Manual burner control

In cases where colder than usual ambient air conditions are causing the system to struggle to reach Kiln Initial Temp, we have 3 options to manage this.

  1. Enter manual burner control mode, and set the burner output level by hand until the desired temperature is reached.
  2. Verify that the cause is due to the system moving out of AutoTempStage 0 and into AutoTempStage 1 prematurely, and increasing ReachMaxTempTime_min.
  3. Adjust the PID variables for AutoTempStage 1 to make the burner more aggressive.

Option 1:

This option is convenient and quick to implement, but requires an attentive operator and will not preempt the issue in other kilns.

To enter manual burner control, use the connect screen and bring up a Numeric Display. Add the variables BurnerOutMan_pct and AutoBurnerControl_bool.

Set AutoBurnerControl_bool to false, and then enter a number between 0 and 100 in BurnerOutMan_pct. This will set the burner output, 100 being fully open and 0 being fully closed.

Option 2:

To verify that this is a viable solution for the problem, use the connect screen and open a numeric display. Add the variables ReachMaxTempTime_min and KilnRunTimeRaw_min.

The system is set to begin the dry in AutoTempStage 0, with the burner set to fully open. As it approaches the Kiln Initial Temp Setpoint, OR if the KilnRunTime exceeds ReachMaxTempTime, it will move to AutoTempStage 1.

Use the kiln temperature graph to check that the Kiln Temperature slowed down after it passed ReachMaxzTempTime.

If so, increase ReachMaxTempTime_min by entering a larger number of minutes for that kiln, and any other kilns that are having the same issue.

Option 3:

This option has potential drawbacks depending on the temperature range from the beginning of the season to the end. If we make the burner too aggressive to compensate for cold temperatures, you can experience significant temperature overshoot in the hotter part of the season next year.
